NON Violence Training

Historic Opportunity to Train with Bernard LaFayette, Jr.

Civil rights pioneer Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr. is returning to Tucson this fall to conduct a Fast-Track Level I Nonviolence Training. This intensive course will certify people to teach the 2-day Core Introduction to Kingian Nonviolence. The dates of the Fast-Track Level I training are Nov. 11 (6 to 9 PM) and Nov. 12 – 15 (9 AM to 9 PM each day).
This is a historic opportunity to receive this “training for trainers” here in Tucson from Bernard LaFayette, who was National Program Administrator for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and who helped start the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and directed the Poor People’s Campaign. Dr. LaFayette was with Dr. King on that fateful day in Memphis, TN when King was assassinated. That morning, Dr. King noted that the next movement should be to institutionalize and internationalize nonviolence. Dr. LaFayette has dedicated his life to carrying out those instructions. He and his colleagues have conducted nonviolence training courses across the US and around the world. We invite and encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to carry on the powerful legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Normally, the Level I training is offered as a two-week course at the University of Rhode Island during the July Summer Nonviolence Institute. We are honored that Dr. LaFayette is returning to Tucson to help the Nonviolence Legacy Project (NVLP) in our efforts to train and certify a critical number of youth and adults, who then can train hundreds, and eventually thousands, of other youth and adults in the philosophy and methodology of nonviolence, in order to help build a culture of peace, justice, and nonviolence in our community.
The NVLP is seeking representation from key groups working on today’s important human rights issues here in the southwest (e.g., border and immigration issues, indigenous rights issues, GLBT concerns) , as well as individuals working with youth to reduce violence. As Dr. King stated in 1967 during a staff conference, “Now is the time to really educate and train people in nonviolence as the more noble path to social justice.”
In order to take the Level I training with Dr. LaFayette in November, it is necessary to first complete the 2-day Core Introduction to Kingian Nonviolence course. There are two upcoming opportunities to take the Core training, which will give you a good grounding in Kingian Nonviolance theory and practice and a clear sense of whether you want to go further and become certified as a Kingian Nonviolence trainer and practicioner.

“Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time: the need to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. People must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.”
- Martin Luther King, Jr., Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Stockholm, Sweden, December 11, 1964
